TRIPOLI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Britain announced on Thursday that Frank Baker has been appointed as its new ambassador to Libya.

The British Embassy in Tripoli said in a statement that Frank Baker was named ambassador to Libya, replacing Peter Millett, and will take office in February.

"I am honored to be the new British Ambassador to Libya. Looking forward to visiting Tripoli soon to meet my team at UK in Libya, and to start working with them to achieve the common interests of Britain and Libya," Baker said earlier.

"Over the coming weeks I will listen to and learn from Libyans across Libya and discuss how we can work together to achieve our common interests," he added.

"Frank has served the UK well as our ambassador to Iraq and also Kuwait. I look forward to working together with him to help Libya make progress towards the political solution and more secure future it so deserves," British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement earlier on Thursday.

"The UK is at the forefront of diplomatic work with the Libyan government and our international partners to help bring stability to Libya. If left unchecked the violence and ungoverned space will only increase the challenges from illegal migration and terrorism. These are issues that matter to the people of Libya, but also to people here in the UK," added Johnson.

The statement did not provide details about the British embassy's official return to Tripoli, which is temporarily working in the neighboring Tunisian capital due to deteriorating security situation in Libya.
