PHNOM PENH, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities are ready to enhance security during Sunday's general election, officials said on Wednesday.

"We are ready to ensure safety, security, and public order for the sixth general election," Gen. Chuon Sovann, deputy National Police commissioner and Phnom Penh Municipal Police chief, said during a gathering of nearly 5,000 security personnel here.

He said the security forces are obliged to prevent, thwart, and quell every attempt to spoil the election.

Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Khuong Sreng called for the people to vote in Sunday's election, saying that it is the only chance in every five years to elect national leaders they like.

National Election Committee (NEC) member Hel Sarath said last week that nearly 70,000 security personnel will be deployed at all 22,967 polling stations across the kingdom on the voting day.

The Southeast Asian country is scheduled to hold the general election for the 125-seat parliament on Sunday, July 29.

Twenty political parties will contest in the election, which will see some 8.38 million people cast their ballots, according to the NEC.
