UNITED NATIONS, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The current and future European Union (EU) members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Wednesday expressed a unified position on the Iran nuclear deal that in the current context, "it is more important than ever" to preserve the deal and Resolution 2231.

"We, as the current and future European Union members of the Council, underline that in the current context, it is more important than ever to preserve the JCPOA (commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal) and Resolution 2231," according to a joint statement of the six current and future EU members of the UNSC (Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Poland and Estonia) after the conclusion of the semi-annual briefing on the implementation of Resolution 2231.

"The JCPOA is widely regarded as fundamental to regional and international peace and security, a major achievement in nuclear non-proliferation and of diplomacy. Fulfillment of all nuclear-related commitments under the NPT (Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) as well as the JCPOA remains fundamental to guarantee the peaceful nature of Iranian nuclear program," said the statement read out to reporters by Polish UN ambassador Joanna Wronecka.

At the briefing, Undersecretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo presented the latest secretary-general's report on the implementation of Resolution 2231.
