NEW DELHI, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Indian authorities have ordered a probe after 32 cataract patients were operated upon at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh state in torchlight.

The operations were carried out under the light of two torches by a team of doctors at the hospital in Nawabganj in the state's Unnao district during a 12-hour power outage Monday.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of any patient losing eyesight after the operation.

Officials said on Wednesday that the district's top health official has been transferred for giving permission for the operations and a doctor suspended for negligence and violation of norms.

"This is height of negligence. A probe is on and no one will be spared," Unnao's district magistrate Ravi Kumar told the media.

Many rural areas in Uttar Pradesh reportedly get only 12 hours of electricity daily.
