HOUSTON, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 7,600 customers were without power in and around the U.S. city of Houston as major cold front dropped temperatures in southeast Texas on Tuesday.

CenterPoint Energy, which is headquartered in Houston, Texas and is a domestic energy delivery company, reported on Tuesday afternoon that 7,687 homes and businesses were in the dark.

Furthermore, approximately 3,000 people were without power in Galveston, a coastal island along the Gulf of Mexico.

Meanwhile, dozens of school districts that educate more than 1 million students across the Houston metro area announced closure on Tuesday ahead of potential winter weather, and many have decided to remain closed on Wednesday due to icy conditions that swept across the region on Tuesday.

The Houston region saw temperature as low as minus 4 degrees Celsius. The cold weather brought the second snow to Houston within 40 days, giving Houstonians big surprises. The last time they saw snow here was 10 years ago.

According to the weather data, the average of low temperatures in January in Houston area is 5 degrees Celsius.
