ULAN BATOR, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Mongolian parliament member Dorjdugar Gantulga announced Monday that he will step down from his post amid what he called the "politically motivated" rape allegation.

"Today, I have submitted a resignation letter. First of all, I want to apologize to my parents, wife and the Mongolian people who supported me," he told reporters.

The lawmaker from the ruling Mongolian People Party has been accused of raping a 25-year-old female student at her home in June, 2017.

The victim's sister first reported it to the police.

When the case was made public, Gantulga, 31, pleaded not guilty and insisted that they "mutually consented" to have sexual intercourse.

He said he was "a victim of politics" and the allegation was political motivated.

"I hope that law enforcement and judicial authorities could find out the truth about the case," he said.
