MUMBAI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- When the Independence Day was celebrated across India, the country had one more reason to cheer up with the birth of a baby penguin, local media reported on Friday.

India's first Humboldt penguin was born on the night of the Independence Day Wednesday at Mumbai's Byculla Zoo, the Times of India newspaper said.

The baby penguin's conditions reportedly seemed stable under the observation of zoo authorities. The sex of the newborn will be determine after a detailed DNA test which is going to be done soon.

"On July 5 this year, a single egg was laid by penguin Flipper who is eldest of the seven. She along with Mr Molt, the youngest penguin, have been a couple for a long time. While Flipper is 4.5 years, Mr Molt turned three last month," zoo authorities said.

It takes around 40-45 days for the egg to hatch, according the report.

It is said that three male and five female penguins were brought to the Mumbai zoo in July 2016 from Coex Aquarium in South Korea's Seoul.
