JERUSALEM, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Israel said late Thursday that the Gazan gunman killed by Israeli troops during the border clash earlier this week worked as a nurse for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders, or MSF).
The MSF, an international humanitarian medical NGO, also issued a statement saying one of its employees, Hani Mohammed Almajdalawi, was killed in Gaza on Monday.
The organization added that it is working to "verify and understand the circumstances regarding this extremely serious incident," without giving more comments or details.
The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, a body of the Israeli Defense Ministry that coordinates government activities with the Palestinians, said Almajdalawi had opened fire towards military forces with a rifle and threw an explosive device at troops.
The Israeli army said forces did fire at a Palestinian who opened fire at them in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday morning. No damage or injuries to the Israeli troops were reported.
Egypt and United Nations officials are struggling to broker a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs Gaza.
