DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The World Bank said on Tuesday it plans to spend 1.357 trillion Tanzanian shillings (about 59.4 million U.S. dollars) to support the education sector in Tanzania.

World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Malawi, Burundi and Somalia Bella Bird made the pledge after her meeting with President John Magufuli at the State House in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

A terse statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communication said Bird met with President Magufuli to review progress on World Bank-supported projects in the east African nation.

"I have had held talks with President Magufuli to review progress on projects funded by the World Bank. Implementation of most of the projects is going well," said Bird.

She said the World Bank support to Tanzania currently stood at 10.186 trillion shillings.

The World Bank Group's current portfolio in Tanzania includes 25 operations with a commitment of nearly 3.95 billion U.S. dollars, most of which is allocated to transport.

In addition, the country benefits from six regional projects. The World Bank Group also supports analytical and technical assistance activities to complement projects and programs.
