SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Nuclear envoys of South Korea and Japan held talks Monday about the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) issues, according to Seoul's foreign ministry.

Lee Do-hoon, South Korea's special representative for the Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, met here with Kenji Kanasugi, director-general of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.

The Seoul ministry said Lee had an in-depth discussion with Kanasugi on the DPRK issues, after holding talks with his Russian and U.S. counterparts last week.

Lee and Kanasugi shared the result of recent consultations between relevant parties, including the United States.

They discussed various ways for substantive progress in denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and building a peace regime through cooperation between Seoul and Tokyo, and for diplomatic efforts to resume follow-up negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington.

The two sides agreed to maintain close communication and cooperation based on the result of the talks, Seoul said.
