RABAT, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan King Mohammed VI on Tuesday called for modernization of the state's military capabilities to tackle terrorism and cyber threats.

He made the remarks on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the creation of the Royal Armed Forces.

The king said he had given his instructions to the services of the General Staff to implement new scientific, technical and engineering research programs and to strengthen and develop them in all military and security fields.

He also called for updating military training methods at different levels, improving military curricula and textbooks, and setting up joint training and working mechanisms in different national schools and institutes.

Morocco will resume compulsory military service in September after the Moroccan parliament voted in January to adopt the draft bill reinstating a 12-month compulsory military service for young people aged between 19 and 25 years old.

The compulsory military service was abolished in 2006.
