HANOI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese goverment is planning to pour additional 45 trillion Vietnamese dong (nearly 2 billion U.S. dollars) into the Mekong in the 2021-2025 period.

The money will be used for inter-provincial and inter-regional projects, including those on infrastructure, railway and adaptation to climate change, local daily newspaper Vietnam News quoted Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc as reporting on Wednesday.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Construction said it is planing to develop houses which adapt to situations of flooding, landslides, droughts, and saline intrusion in the delta.

Earlier, the Vietnamese government earmarked nearly 194 trillion Vietnamese dong (over 8.4 billion U.S. dollars) for the delta's development in the 2016-2020 period.

The Mekong Delta, home to a fifth of Vietnam's population, grows half of its rice output, supplies 90 percent of its annual grain exports, and is the source of most of the nation's seafood exports, according to its Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
