An exhibition on Albert Einstein has opened to the public in Shanghai, showcasing more than 130 pieces of his work and marking the German-born scientists 140th birthday.
SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- An exhibition showcasing German scientist Albert Einsteins handwritten General Theory of Relativity and famous equation E=MC2 (squared) opened to the public in Shanghai on Aug. 1.
The exhibition that marks the scientist's 140th birthday showcases more than 130 pieces of his works, including his manuscripts, papers and letters stored in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.
Yang Chen-ning, a Nobel prize-winning physicist, was one of the first exhibition visitors. "Einstein is a scientist I admire very much. He (and his works) had a profound impact on physics and on our daily lives," Yang said at the opening ceremony on Aug. 1.
Hanoch Gutfreund, an expert of the university's Albert Einstein Archives, expected that the exhibition would enhance the Chinese public's understanding of Einstein and stimulate young people's interest in science.
He said that Einstein had visited Shanghai twice in his lifetime, leaving many stories between the scientist and the Chinese city.
The exhibition showcases the letters he exchanged with a group of Chinese scholars, which not only show a deep relationship between Einstein and China, but also allow people to see how China accepted the theory of relativity, Gutfreund said.
Other exhibits, such as his original paper on gravitational waves, and his Nobel certificate and medal, are also major attractions.
Einstein was one of the founders of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He contributed his works to the university, which now holds 80,000 artifacts, the world's largest Einstein collection.
The exhibition will run until Oct. 22 at the Shanghai World Expo Museum.
